Osaka To Host Another World Expo in 2025

In 2025, Osaka will host the World Expo, one of the oldest and largest events globally.

Once every five years, a city hosts the 6-month occasion inviting countries from around the world to showcase the best of what they have to offer in custom-designed, temporary pavilions.

Sou Fujimoto was responsible for next year's Expo masterplan, proposing a 60,000 sqm timber structure spanning 700 meters in diameter – if you’re struggling to imagine the scale, let’s just say it’s huge!

Although this next Expo is right around the corner, it’s hard not to reminisce on the iconic World Expo that Osaka hosted in 1970.

The architecture of Expo '70 in Osaka showcased futuristic and experimental designs, featuring iconic structures like Kenzo Tange's Big Roof, Kisho Kurokawa's Takara Beautilion, and the Tower of the Sun by Tarō Okamoto. The event emphasized modernism, innovation, and technological advancements in architecture and design.

Expo ‘70 came at a time where Japanese architecture was at peak experimentation, with the rise of Metabolists and their innovative visons of future architecture. The Metabolists pursued architecture and cities as being adaptable and ever-changing, ideas that are still explored to this day.

I can’t wait to see what the architecture of 2025 brings – stay tuned for my thoughts!
